The United States Department of Commerce has, among other responsibilities, the oversight of gathering economic and demographic data for both business and government decision-making. This is done by its Bureau of Economical Analysis (the BEA).
The GNP Versus the GDP
The GNP (Gross National Product) was used before 1991 to measure the health of the United States economy and remains a useful barometer. It measures the output of the country’s citizens, whether the enterprises be in the United States or elsewhere.
The GDP (Gross Domestic Product) has been used since 1991 to gauge performance of the United States economy. It tallies the total output within the nation, including even that produced by foreign owned enterprises. Both the GNP and GDP measure the market value of all products and services produced in one year. The GDP divided by the number of a country’s citizens is used as the measure of a country’s standard of living.
