From the time of its birth in 1891, basketball has undergone a slow, but steady, journey to become the fast-paced sport that is enjoyed world-wide today. Along the way, there have been a few changes that have had a tremendous impact on the game.

The Dribble

It is remarkable that dribbling, one of the sport’s primary weapons, was not officially allowed until 1900, when players were permitted one double-handed dribble. It would take another decade before the present rules were established.

Even then, the dribble was not emphasized by coaches until the late 1920s, most feeling that dribbling, when done too much, was actually “selfish” and a form of “showboating.” To them, a skillful passer was much more important to a team.
